About BMI Calculator

BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (or weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by 703, for imperial units). The result is compared against standard bands — under 18.5 is classed underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obese.

The measure was devised in the 19th century by the statistician Adolphe Quetelet as a way to describe body weight across populations, not to diagnose any one individual. It remains widely used today because it only needs height and weight, making it a fast way to track a trend over time or get a rough screening number before a doctor's visit.

Because it can't distinguish fat from muscle, BMI often misclassifies muscular or athletic people as overweight despite low body fat, and can underestimate risk in people with low muscle mass. Some health bodies also apply lower BMI thresholds for South and East Asian populations, since health risks there tend to appear at lower values than the standard bands suggest.

Frequently Asked Questions

BMI is a general screening tool. It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density or body composition, so it should not be used alone to assess health.
