About File Hash Generator

A cryptographic hash function takes a file of any size and produces a fixed-length string of characters — a digest — derived entirely from its contents. Changing even a single byte anywhere in the file produces a completely different digest, which is what makes hashes useful as an integrity check: if you compute a file's hash and it matches the value the publisher listed, you can be confident the file wasn't corrupted in transit or altered afterward.

Hashing is one-way — there's no key or process that reconstructs the original file from its digest, which is what separates it from encryption. This tool calculates SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 using the browser's built-in Web Crypto API, since different projects publish checksums using different algorithms and having all four available avoids guessing which one a download page used.

SHA-256 and the longer variants are still considered collision-resistant for practical purposes. SHA-1 remains fine for catching accidental corruption but is no longer considered safe in situations where someone might deliberately try to forge a file with a matching hash.

A hash is a unique fingerprint of a file's contents, commonly used to verify a download hasn't been corrupted or tampered with.
