About Remove Extra Spaces
This tool collapses runs of repeated spaces and tabs down to a single space, and trims whitespace from the start and end of each line, cleaning up the kind of irregular spacing that comes from copying text out of a PDF, an old typewriter-style document, or a webpage with inconsistent formatting.
A common source of extra spaces is the old convention of typing two spaces after a period, a habit left over from monospaced typewriter fonts, which most modern style guides and web typography no longer call for. Pasted text also frequently carries invisible tabs or non-breaking spaces used for layout in the original document, which look fine in their source but create ragged spacing once the text is dropped somewhere else.
It's a quick fix before publishing text to a website, pasting into an email, or feeding text into another tool that treats spacing literally, since inconsistent whitespace can otherwise throw off word wrapping, search matching, or formatting downstream.
