About Text Sorter

Alphabetical sorting uses locale-aware comparison rather than a raw character-code sort, so it behaves the way a dictionary or phone book would: lowercase and uppercase versions of the same letter sort next to each other (apple comes before Zebra, not after), and the comparison is smarter than a plain ASCII ordering. Length-based sorting instead compares the number of characters in each line, which is useful for spotting outliers like unusually short or long entries in a list.

Numbers-as-text is a common gotcha: sorted alphabetically, 10 comes before 2 because the comparison looks at the first character first, not at the numeric value. If your lines are meant to be sorted numerically, this string-based sort will produce a different order than a spreadsheet's numeric sort would.

Typical uses include alphabetizing a contact list, a bibliography, or a glossary, sorting a keyword list before reviewing it, and combining the sort with the optional duplicate removal to both order and deduplicate a merged list in one pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a text-based sort, not a numeric one, so numeric-looking lines like 10 and 2 are compared digit by digit as text and 10 sorts before 2, since '1' comes before '2'.
