About Image Converter

JPG, PNG and WEBP solve different problems, which is why format conversion is such a common need. JPG uses lossy DCT-based compression tuned for photographs with smooth gradients and lots of color variation, but it has no transparency support and shows visible artifacts on flat-color graphics or sharp text edges. PNG is lossless and supports a full alpha channel, which makes it the standard for screenshots, logos and icons, at the cost of larger files for photographic content. WEBP is newer and supports both a lossy mode (similar to JPG but generally more efficient) and a lossless mode (similar to PNG but usually smaller), plus transparency in either mode.

Choosing a target format is really a question of what the image contains and where it's going. Photos generally compress best as JPG or lossy WEBP. Graphics with transparency or flat colors — logos, icons, diagrams — belong in PNG or WEBP, not JPG, since converting them to JPG bakes any transparent areas in as solid white. If file size for the web matters most and the audience's browsers are reasonably current, WEBP usually wins on both photo and graphic content.

Conversion changes the container and compression method but can't add back detail a lossy format already discarded, so converting a heavily compressed JPG to PNG will not restore the original sharpness — it just locks in the current quality losslessly from that point forward.
