About Image Flip

Flipping mirrors an image across an axis: a horizontal flip swaps left and right as if you were looking at the image in a mirror, while a vertical flip swaps top and bottom, turning the image upside down along its horizontal midline. Like rotation, this is a direct pixel remap rather than a resampling operation — every pixel simply moves to its mirrored coordinate with no interpolation. As with rotation, a PNG source stays pixel-for-pixel identical, while a JPG or lossy WEBP source is re-encoded through that format's own compressor on the way out.

A common use case is correcting front-facing camera photos, which many phones capture already mirrored relative to how the subject appeared, so flipping brings text, logos, or asymmetric features back to their true orientation. Designers also use flipping to create a mirrored duplicate of an element for symmetric layouts, or to adjust which direction a subject appears to be facing within a composition.

It's worth checking any text, logos or watermarks in the image before flipping, since mirroring reverses them and makes them read backward — a flip that looks fine compositionally can leave readable content looking wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rotating turns the image around a center point in 90-degree steps; flipping mirrors it across a horizontal or vertical axis instead, which reverses left-right or top-bottom rather than turning the whole frame.
