About JPG to WEBP
Both JPG and WEBP's lossy mode throw away image detail to shrink file size, but they use different underlying codecs. WEBP's lossy compression is derived from the VP8 video codec and uses more advanced prediction between blocks than JPG's older DCT-only approach, which generally lets it hit a similar visual quality at a noticeably smaller file size — commonly 25-35% smaller for photographic content, though the exact gain depends heavily on the image.
This conversion is a common step in web performance work, since page load speed and Core Web Vitals metrics like Largest Contentful Paint are directly affected by how much image data a browser has to download. Swapping large JPG photos for WEBP versions on a website is one of the simpler wins available without touching layout or design.
The main thing to weigh is compatibility rather than quality: WEBP is supported by all current major browsers, but very old browser versions and some third-party tools, image editors or print workflows still expect JPG specifically. If the image is only going to live on a modern website, WEBP is usually the better default.
