About PDF Metadata
Every PDF carries a Document Information Dictionary — a small set of key-value fields storing things like title, author, subject, keywords, and creation and modification dates — entirely separate from the page content itself. File browsers, PDF readers, search engines and document management systems read these fields to display and index the file, but none of them appear anywhere on the rendered pages.
Editing metadata is useful for keeping a document library organized and searchable, making sure a file shows a sensible title instead of its raw filename when shared or opened, or cleaning up an author field that still shows a colleague's name — or the name of whoever set up the original template — before a document goes out externally.
It's worth knowing this doesn't scrub every trace of a file's origin. This tool updates the common fields — title, author, subject, keywords — but many PDF-generating applications also stamp a Producer or Creator field identifying the software used to create the file, and that information can remain even after the fields shown here are updated.
